Passage West (An Pasáiste Thiar in Irish) is a port town in County Cork, Ireland, situated on the west bank of Cork Harbour. It is some 10 km from Cork city centre, separated from the urban sprawl of Douglas and Rochestown, but close to all services, shopping and amenities. Passage West was designated a conservation area in the 2003 Cork County Development Plan.
Passage West today is one of Cork city's principal residential dormitory towns. The town suffered from relatively high unemployment for much of the late 1980s and early 1990s, but recent re-development, along with the sweeping harbour views the area offers, has ensured that the town is now one of Cork's most desirable residential locations. There has been a substantial amount of new housing development in the last seven or eight years - especially on the northern edge of the town.
In 2006 Howard Holdings, one of Ireland's largest property development companies acquired the Royal Victoria Dockyard site. In December 2007 they held a public display of plans for the redevelopment of the site. They have indicated that this development will proceed immediately subject to planning approval.
